5 language habits that will speed up your progress.

Learning · 6 min read

You do not need hours a day. You need small habits you can keep even when work gets busy.

1. Practise a little every day

Fifteen minutes every day works better than one three-hour session on Sunday. Pin it to something you already do, like your morning coffee or your commute, so you do not have to decide each day.

2. Speak out loud, even when you are alone

Reading and listening feel like progress, but speaking is the skill most people lack. Describe what you are doing while you cook. Read a paragraph aloud. It feels strange for a week and normal after that.

3. Learn phrases, not single words

A single word is hard to use. A phrase like "Could I get the bill?" is ready to go. When you hear a useful sentence, write down the whole thing and reuse it the same day.

4. Use the language for things you already enjoy

A series you like, a podcast about your hobby, a football match with commentary in Spanish. Start with subtitles in the same language, not in your own. You will follow the story and still see the words.

5. Keep a list of your own mistakes

Most people make the same five or six mistakes again and again. Keep a note on your phone. Add each new one and read the list once a week. When a mistake stops showing up, cross it off.

Where to start

Do not start all five at once. Pick the first habit and keep it for two weeks. Then add another. If you want help with the speaking and the mistake list, that is exactly what a tutor is for.
